Japan Tax-Free Calculator: ¥5,000 Rule, 8% vs 10%

Japan's tax-free minimum is ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day. That usually means ¥5,400 tax-included for eligible food or ¥5,500 for 10% goods. Here is the math without the guesswork.

The ¥5,000 minimum is before tax

Eligibility is based on the combined tax-excluded price of qualifying goods bought at one tax-free store on one day. Purchases from another store or another day normally cannot be combined.

On a Japanese tag, 税抜 and 本体価格 mean before tax; 税込 means tax included.

10% goods: ¥5,500 including tax

For cosmetics, medicine, clothing, electronics and most general goods, ¥5,000 × 1.10 = ¥5,500. If you only know the tax-included price, divide it by 1.10.

Example: ¥6,600 including tax equals ¥6,000 before tax and ¥600 consumption tax. Subtracting 10% from the final price is not the correct reverse calculation.

8% goods: ¥5,400 including tax

Eligible food and non-alcoholic drinks generally use the reduced 8% rate. ¥5,000 × 1.08 = ¥5,400. Divide a tax-included food price by 1.08 to estimate its pre-tax value.

Example: ¥5,832 including tax equals ¥5,400 before tax and ¥432 consumption tax.

When your cart mixes 8% and 10% items

Convert each item using its own rate, then add the pre-tax values. Receipts often separate totals by tax rate, but the store makes the final category and eligibility decision.

Ikura Cart scans Japanese price tags and keeps a running pre-tax cart total, making it easier to see how far you are from the tax-free minimum.

Treat the result as an estimate

A calculator cannot account for every store's process. Some department stores and tax-free counters charge a handling fee, so confirm the amount shown by the store before paying.

FAQ

Is Japan's ¥5,000 tax-free minimum tax included?

No. It is ¥5,000 before tax at the same tax-free store on the same day.

What tax-included total qualifies for 10% goods?

Mathematically, ¥5,000 before tax is ¥5,500 including 10% tax. The goods and store must also be eligible.

Is ¥5,400 enough for food?

If every item qualifies for the 8% reduced rate, ¥5,400 including tax equals ¥5,000 before tax. Alcohol and dining out use 10%.

Can I combine purchases from different branches?

Normally no; the rule is per tax-free store per day. Confirm any shopping-center counter arrangement locally.
