Separate mailing by the traveler ended in 2025

For goods purchased on or after 2025-04-01, Japan no longer accepts the old unaccompanied-baggage treatment. Taking a tax-free purchase to a post office, courier counter, hotel desk, or luggage-shipping service yourself does not let a shipping receipt replace the goods at departure.

Japan Customs may check that you possess the recorded purchases when leaving. If the items are neither with you nor exported through the approved store-arranged route, the exempted consumption tax can be collected. Shipping first and explaining later is not a reliable workaround.

Direct overseas shipment starts and ends at the shop

The direct overseas shipment system remains available. The key is custody: at the place where the tax-free procedure is completed, the purchaser enters the transport arrangement and the goods are handed to the carrier there. The shop sends them to an overseas home or other accepted address without returning the parcel to the traveler.

Not every tax-free shop offers this service, and a shop that ships within Japan is not automatically able to ship tax-free goods overseas. Ask before payment whether the exact branch supports direct overseas shipment under the tax-free system, which destinations it serves, and who handles the export documents.

Check the real cost and what the carrier will accept

Tax-free status removes Japanese consumption tax under the applicable procedure. It does not make postage, packing, carrier fees, customs clearance, or possible import charges at the destination disappear. Compare the complete delivered cost with buying tax-free and carrying the goods in your luggage.

International transport rules also depend on the item and destination. Japan Post lists perfume, sprays, nail polish, power banks, and other hazardous articles among common restrictions or conditional items. A shop may use another carrier with different rules, so have staff check every product before it goes into the carton.

Choose the route before the goods leave the counter

Carry the purchase yourself when the shop has no approved direct-shipping service, the item cannot be mailed, or checked-bag cost is lower. Use store-arranged shipment for bulky eligible goods only when the branch confirms the destination, delivery estimate, insurance, fees, and customs paperwork.
