What to Do With Leftover Money on a Japan IC Card

The right move depends on the exact card in your wallet. Physical Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO are deposit-free visitor cards valid for 28 days, and their normally loaded value is not refundable. A regular physical Suica or PASMO includes a ¥500 deposit and can be returned, but a fee can consume up to ¥220 of the remaining balance.

Check whether yours is a visitor card or a regular card

Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO are designed for short visits. Both expire 28 days from purchase, require no ¥500 deposit and do not offer a normal refund of unused loaded value. A balance left after validity ends cannot be used on a later trip.

Regular Suica and PASMO are different products. They include a ¥500 deposit and allow a card-return refund. ICOCA and other regional cards have their own issuing operators, so use the name printed on your card to check the correct return office before leaving its region.

Calculate whether returning a regular card is worth it

For a regular Suica, the calculation is max(balance minus ¥220, ¥0) plus the ¥500 deposit. The regular PASMO rule produces the same result because the fee is ¥220 or the entire balance when the balance is lower.

Examples: a ¥1,000 balance returns ¥1,280 after adding the deposit. A ¥100 or ¥0 balance returns only the ¥500 deposit. If you plan another Japan trip within the card's usable life, keeping it can be simpler than paying the refund fee and buying another card later.

Return the card to the company that issued it

A regular Suica issued by JR East must be returned at a JR East station. Cards carrying another issuer's name, including Tokyo Monorail Suica, follow that issuer's process. PASMO returns are handled by participating railway or bus operators, and the card itself is surrendered.

Do not wait until you are airside at the airport. Find an eligible service counter while you are still in the issuer's area and allow time for the procedure. Mobile cards and commuter-pass products use separate rules from the physical stored-value cards covered here.

For a non-refundable visitor card, spend down carefully

Use the card for your remaining train or bus trips first, then check the balance at a ticket machine or gate. Many convenience stores, station shops, restaurants and vending machines displaying a compatible IC mark accept stored value. Split payment is not universal, so ask the cashier before tapping if the purchase costs more than the balance.
