Do You Qualify for Tax-Free Shopping in Japan?

A foreign passport alone does not make every visitor tax-free. The store checks the status granted when you entered Japan, your entry record, and whether you are the person making the purchase.
Start with the status granted at entry
Under the rules reviewed on 2026-07-24, eligible foreign nationals are non-residents admitted with Temporary Visitor, Diplomat, or Official status, plus limited categories of landing permits. A visa waiver or eVisa may let you travel to Japan, but the status recorded when you land is what the tax-free counter needs to verify.
Student, work, dependent, technical intern, and working holiday statuses are not on that eligibility list. Being in Japan for only a few weeks does not convert one of those resident statuses into Temporary Visitor status.
Keep proof of landing with your original passport
Bring the original passport or other accepted landing document used for this entry. A photo, photocopy, residence card, eVisa issuance screen, or boarding pass does not by itself prove tax-free eligibility at checkout.
If an automated immigration gate would leave the passport without a landing seal, tell the immigration officer you need the seal before moving on to customs. The National Tax Agency warns that a shop may be unable to verify you without it. A participating shop may instead accept the live Visit Japan Web tax-free code, but support is not universal.
Use a checkout checklist before calculating savings
Confirm four things: your landing status is eligible, your entry evidence is available, the shop offers tax-free sales, and the purchase is for you to carry out of Japan rather than for business or resale. The named purchaser must complete the procedure and export the goods.
Only after those checks should the ¥5,000 threshold and tax saving drive the basket decision. Ikura Cart can help read a shelf label and compare tax-included and pre-tax totals, but it cannot replace the store's identity and status check.
- Check the status printed on your landing permission
- Carry the original passport while shopping
- Ask for a seal immediately if you use an automated gate
- Use only a live Visit Japan Web code at supporting stores
Japanese citizens living abroad follow a separate route
A Japanese citizen is not covered by the foreign tourist rule. To qualify as a non-resident, the person must document at least two continuous years of residence outside Japan with an eligible residence certificate or family-register address-history copy prepared within the required period after the latest entry.
The refund-method change announced for purchases from 2026-11-01 changes when tax is paid and returned. Do not assume it removes the purchaser eligibility check. Review the latest official traveler guidance again if your shopping date is close to the changeover.
FAQ
Can a student or working holiday visitor shop tax-free?
Not under the ordinary visitor scheme when the status is Student or Working Holiday. Eligibility is tied to the qualifying status or landing permit, not simply the length of the trip.
Is a Japan eVisa enough at the tax-free counter?
No. An eVisa authorizes travel and entry, while the shop must verify the status and landing record for this visit through accepted passport information or a supported live Visit Japan Web code.
What if an automated gate did not stamp my passport?
Ask the immigration officer for the landing seal immediately after the gate and before customs inspection. Later recovery may not be practical, and a store may refuse the procedure.
Can my companion use my passport for a shared basket?
No. The eligible purchaser must complete the tax-free procedure and personally take the recorded goods out of Japan.
